Our Understanding of Marriage:
“Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Matthew 19:4-6
Marriage is a gift of God in which one man and one woman covenant together in a lifelong union to love and serve each other and live together as husband and wife for God’s purposes, His church, and His glory. Marriage was established by God as He created Adam and Eve and defines how they are to live together in relationship to each other (Genesis 2:24). Throughout the Bible, God uses marriage and marital language to communicate and illustrate His covenant and commitment to His people. In the Old Covenant, we read of God describing the people of Israel as His bride. In the New Covenant, we see marriage as a picture of the union between Jesus and His church (Ephesians 5). God has created marriage in order that we might illustrate and point to this great union between Jesus and His bride, the church.
A marriage covenant is not a contract. It is a commitment to demonstrate the self-less love, service, and faithfulness of Jesus and live in union and harmony with one’s husband or wife. It is a commitment and promise not only of faithfulness and love in the present, but of faithfulness and love in the future. It is a declaration before God and all those present at the wedding ceremony, ‘till death do us part’.
