Our God is one who “upholds the widow and the fatherless” (Psalm 146:9) to such a degree that He is honored to be called the “Father to the fatherless and protector of widows” (Psalm 68:5). Therefore, throughout redemptive history, he has told His people to share in his concern for these vulnerable classes of people made in His image. In fact, James, the brother of Jesus, went so far as to argue that a pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is one that prompts a person to “visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world” (James 1:27). For these reasons, we’re going to pray for orphans and consider how God might have us minister to their needs during National Foster Care Month—the month of May.
